GIVE ALL STUDENTS IN BC THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO RESPOND TO AN EMERGENCY
CPR training is mandatory in schools in Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. BC students deserve the same.
In January 2024, our daughter Sidney died a preventable death from an accidental fentanyl poisoning in a campus dorm at the University of Victoria. None of the students who had to witness her death received CPR or naloxone training in high school. They had to rely on a system that failed them and failed our daughter. Every young person in BC deserves basic CPR, AED and naloxone training in school.
We have since learned about the ACT Foundation which is a national charitable organization that helps high schools across Canada establish free CPR and AED training for students, and training in how to respond to a suspected opioid overdose.
The ACT Foundation has already made significant strides in supporting BC public secondary schools establish their own programs, enabling teachers to educate their students in essential lifesaving techniques. WE JUST NEED TO MAKE CPR, AED and NALOXONE training a PART OF THE BC CURRICULUM SO ALL STUDENTS BENEFIT.
